Where Power BI projects start in small and mid-sized firms
Most Power BI projects start with one painful spreadsheet. A finance lead spends three days each month copying exports into Excel, or a sales director gets numbers that never match the CRM. A job advert for a reporting analyst is often the public sign of this pain. Offering to automate one existing report for a fixed price is easier to approve than a dashboard strategy, and about 1 in 3 such projects grows into ongoing work.
Licensing changes create a second window. Microsoft raised the Power BI Pro price in April 2025 and is moving Premium P capacities to Fabric capacities at each customer's renewal. Both make companies review who has which licence and what runs where. A short licence and capacity review, priced around €900 to €1,400, opens the door to clean-up and migration work worth several times more.
Data work is bought on trust, because the client gives you access to finance and sales figures. A 10-minute call with the finance director or operations owner usually tells you more about their reporting pain than a long brief. Meetcatcher suggests companies whose size and industry match the kind of reporting you build, and some of them, such as accounting firms or ERP resellers, can become partners who send you their own clients.
