How many prospects should a solo founder contact each week?

Most solo founders do well with 30 to 50 well-targeted prospects a week. At typical booking rates that brings one or two meetings a week without crowding out client work.

Work backwards from the clients you need, not forwards from a list. If you want three new clients a quarter and about one in five first meetings becomes a client, you need 15 meetings in 13 weeks. At 2 to 5 bookings per 100 targeted prospects, the benchmark in our first SaaS customers playbook, that means 300 to 750 prospects a quarter, or roughly 23 to 58 a week.

Your time sets the ceiling, not the size of the list. Researching a prospect properly and writing a personal first message takes 5 to 10 minutes, so 40 prospects is four to six hours a week, plus follow-ups and replies. Above about 80 a week, most founders stop personalising, and reply rates fall with it.

Consistency beats bursts. Forty contacts every week for three months outperforms 300 in one week followed by silence, because replies, follow-ups and meetings then arrive at a pace you can handle next to delivery work.

Set your own weekly number

  1. 1Pick the client targetDecide how many new clients you need this quarter and estimate your meeting-to-client rate; 15 to 25% is a reasonable starting assumption.
  2. 2Convert it to meetingsDivide the client target by that rate. Three clients at 20% means 15 meetings, a little over one a week.
  3. 3Convert meetings to prospectsDivide meetings by your booking rate, then sanity-check it against a normal reply rate for cold emails to founders.
  4. 4Block the timeReserve two fixed slots a week for research and first messages and one for follow-ups. Treat them like client work.
  5. 5Review after four weeksIf 160 prospects produced no meetings, the problem is the message or the audience, not the volume.

Track contacts, replies and meetings weekly in a simple sheet; after a month you will know your own rates and can adjust the number. If you sell software, how many leads one paying customer takes adds the rest of the funnel.
