What is a good pickup rate for B2B cold calls?

A typical B2B reach rate is around 25%: of 100 prospects you call, about 25 pick up at some point. Counted per dial, including repeat attempts, expect one in eight.

Three different numbers often get mixed up. The pickup rate (or connect rate) counts dials answered by a live person. The reach rate counts prospects you spoke to at least once, across several attempts. The meeting rate counts conversations that end with a booked meeting. A team can have a low pickup rate and still a healthy reach rate.

The 25% figure is the typical connect rate in our breakdown of what 100 cold calls typically bring, where those 25 conversations turn into 3–7 meetings in most industries. A worked example: you call 80 prospects up to three times each, 187 dials in total. If 21 of them pick up at some point, your reach rate is 26%, right on target, while your pickup rate per dial is only 11%. Both are normal; they measure different things.

What moves the pickup rate is mostly outside the script: direct numbers instead of switchboards, the time of day and whether the prospect recognises your name. One rep quoted in that article saw results jump by 20–35% once prospects had seen his company on LinkedIn before the call.

Benchmarks to compare against

  • Reach rate per prospectAround 25% is typical. Under 15% usually points to the list: outdated numbers, switchboards or the wrong roles.
  • Pickup rate per dialRoughly one in eight to one in ten when you count every attempt, so plan at least three tries per prospect on different days.
  • Conversation to meetingAbout 10% is a good target with researched lists, the goal a cold calling trainer sets in how to measure sales success.
  • Calls to meetingExpect three to seven booked meetings from every 100 calls, and more for niche offers sent to warmed-up contacts. Turn this into calls per client.

A good pickup rate is one that beats your own last month. Track it weekly next to reach rate and meeting rate, and fix the list before the pitch. Pickup rate stops mattering once the other side has agreed to talk: on Meetcatcher, the decision maker accepts your invitation and picks one of your time slots, so both people expect the call when it starts.
