What percentage of SaaS demos turn into paying customers?
Typically 15 to 40% of B2B SaaS demos that take place end in a paying customer. Early-stage startups usually land lower, around 12 to 25%.
A demo is one of the strongest moments in a sales-led SaaS funnel, because the buyer gives you their time and sees the product working on their problem. Demo calls and personal meetings close at 15 to 40%, as laid out in our customer cost breakdown, and that is well ahead of channels where the buyer never talks to a person.
Early-stage numbers are lower and slower. Our playbook for the first SaaS customers sees first meeting to paid pilot at around 12 to 25%, with at least 15% of pilots converting to paid. A worked example: 30 demos a quarter, 6 pilots and 4 paying customers is a 13% demo-to-paid rate, which is healthy for a product with few references.
Where demos come from changes the result more than the demo script does. A demo booked from a cold list starts with doubt; one that comes from a referral or a matched introduction starts with a reason. Calls set up on Meetcatcher are an example: both sides see why the other may be useful before agreeing to talk, which tends to put those conversations at the higher end of the range.
Where demos are won or lost
- Show-up rateDemos that never happen sink the rate. Aim for 80 to 90% attendance and compare with a normal no-show rate.
- Qualification before the callConfirm the problem and who decides before the demo. Unqualified demos are the main reason rates fall below 15%.
- Their data, not your scriptShow the product solving one of their real cases. A generic tour feels like marketing.
- A pilot as the next stepA short pilot with clear success criteria turns interest into a decision with a date.
Measure demo-to-paid separately from the self-serve funnel. Visitors who sign up on their own follow different maths, covered in website conversion rates for B2B SaaS. If your rate is under 10% for three months, fix qualification first; if it is above 40%, you can probably afford more demos with less-qualified leads.
