How long does business networking take to bring in clients?
Usually three to six months of regular networking before the first client, and around a year before it brings a steady flow of work.
Networking is slow because trust builds up in layers. Few people buy from someone they met once; they buy after the second or third contact, or they pass your name on when a need appears. A first meeting creates awareness, a follow-up creates familiarity, and work tends to come from people who already remember what you do.
A typical path for a small agency attending two events a month: 15–20 new contacts in month one, a handful of follow-up calls and perhaps one small project by month three, the first referral from an early contact by month six, and around a quarter of new work coming through the network after a year. An hour of offline speed networking can produce 10–20 contacts, as described in networking online vs offline, but only a few lead anywhere.
Two things shorten the wait: meeting people who already have a reason to work with you, and following up within days rather than weeks. On-demand online formats help with the first. Meetcatcher, for example, suggests companies where cooperation makes sense for both sides, so the first call tests a concrete fit instead of being a general introduction.
Signs your networking is on track
- Month 1You can say what you do in 30 seconds, a skill that business speed networking trains fast, and 10–20 new contacts know your specialism.
- Month 3Some contacts answer your follow-ups, and at least two or three have suggested a call or an introduction.
- Month 6The first project or referral has come in, ideally from someone you met more than once.
- Month 12A steady share of enquiries mention a contact by name. Keep that going with a habit of following up after networking calls.
If nothing has come in after six months of steady effort, change where you network or what you ask for before giving up. A sharper description of the clients you want, built with an ideal customer profile, makes it easier for contacts to think of you at the right moment.
