How much should a B2B startup spend to win its first 10 clients?

Plan for about ten times your expected customer acquisition cost, plus roughly 30% for testing channels that will not work out.

The budget follows from the cost of one customer. Customer acquisition cost (CAC) includes ad spend, tools, content and your own time, and our breakdown of SaaS acquisition costs shows how the pieces add up. Early on, CAC runs higher than it will later, because you are still learning which message and which channel work.

A worked example: a startup selling a €300 a month tool expects a CAC of around €900 while it tests. Ten clients means €9,000, plus a 30% buffer for experiments that fail, so €11,700 spread over three to six months. Founder time counts too: if you spend eight hours a week on outreach, price those hours honestly, as described in what goes into CAC.

Spending in the wrong order is the most common waste. Paid ads need a page that converts and a clear offer. Until then, a small daily budget is enough to test messages, and our guide to setting up PPC for a SaaS suggests as little as €10–20 a day to keep brand recall. The first ten clients usually come from direct conversations, not campaigns.

Where the first budget should go

  • Direct conversations firstCalls with potential clients teach you the message. Meetcatcher fits here: you only pay for calls that actually take place, so the budget goes into conversations rather than clicks.
  • A page that convertsA clear landing page before any ad spend, otherwise you pay for visits that leave.
  • Small paid testsOne channel at a time, with a fixed test budget and a rule for when to stop.
  • Tools you actually useA CRM and one outreach tool are enough at this stage. Cancel anything you do not open every week.

Rule: fund the next client, not the whole year. Set a budget for the first three clients, measure the real CAC, then put more into the channel that produced them. If you have no clients yet, how long the first paying customer usually takes helps you plan the runway.
