How do I get my first SEO client without case studies?

Show proof before the sale instead: a short audit of the prospect's own site, a discounted pilot in return for a case study, or white-label work for an established agency.

A first SEO client is not really buying your track record. They are buying the belief that you understand their site better than the last person who pitched them. A case study is one way to show that, but a specific finding about their own pages is often stronger, because it is about them and it is new to them.

Expect the first client to come from numbers, not luck. A realistic path: review 25 sites in one niche, find clear problems on 8 to 10 of them, have 6 to 8 short conversations and win one paying client, usually a fixed project worth €900 to €2,500. That first client then becomes the case study you were missing.

Keep any review legal and polite. Check only public pages, respect robots.txt and share findings with one relevant person at a time rather than sending a report to a whole list. Our guide on getting clients as an SEO consultant covers niche-specific techniques once the first project is done.

Proof that works without a portfolio

  • An audit of their own siteThree to five concrete issues on the prospect's pages, such as broken internal links or missing page titles, explained in plain words. Specific beats impressive.
  • A paid pilot with case-study rightsOffer a small, discounted first project in return for permission to publish the results. Read whether a pilot should be free before you set the price.
  • White-label work for an agencyAgencies that sell SEO but lack hands need delivery capacity. Their clients become your experience, even if your name is not on the report.
  • Your own site as the experimentRank one page of your own for a niche term and show the before and after. It proves the method on a site you fully control.
  • Calls with matched companiesOn Meetcatcher, companies whose needs fit your service can be invited to a ten-minute call, so you present a finding to a decision maker instead of waiting for a reply to a cold email.

Pick one niche, prepare findings for real sites in it and aim for six to eight conversations in your first month. Our look at the cheapest channels for digital services explains why personal channels beat ads at this stage, when every client is worth more as proof than as revenue.
