How do you find prospects on LinkedIn without Sales Navigator?

Use free LinkedIn search with Boolean operators, the People tab on company pages and keyword post search. That covers most early prospecting before Navigator pays off.

Free LinkedIn search is more powerful than it looks. It accepts Boolean operators: quotes for exact phrases, AND, OR and NOT. A search such as "head of operations" AND logistics NOT recruiter returns a usable list without any paid filter. One rep in our Sales Navigator review put it simply: if you know Boolean, the free version can take you 60% of the way.

What you lose without Navigator is speed and some filters, such as company headcount ranges, recent job changes and saved lead alerts. Free accounts can also hit a monthly limit on people searches when they search a lot, so plan your searches instead of browsing. If you spend more than three or four hours a week searching, the time saved usually justifies paying.

Whatever tool you use, contact people one by one and with a real reason. Copying profile data into lists or automating messages breaks LinkedIn's rules and puts your account at risk.

A free prospecting routine

  1. 1Start from company pagesList 20 target companies, open the People tab on each page and search it by role keyword, such as marketing or finance.
  2. 2Search posts, not only peopleSearch for a problem your service solves or a phrase like "looking for an agency", then sort by the latest posts.
  3. 3Save Boolean searchesCombine role, industry and exclusions in one query and bookmark it, so you can rerun it every week in a minute.
  4. 4Check activity before you writeOpen the activity tab first. Someone who posted this month is far more likely to reply, as shown in finding active prospects.
  5. 5Add a source beyond LinkedInMatched introductions on Meetcatcher bring decision makers who already have a reason to talk, without any searching on your side.

Run the free routine for a month and count the conversations it brings. If the bottleneck is finding people, compare paid options on our Sales Navigator alternative page. If the bottleneck is replies, a paid tool will not fix it.
