How many directory listings does a new B2B website need for SEO?
Around 20 relevant, active directories is enough for a new B2B website. Past about 30, extra listings add little, and low-quality ones can do more harm than good.
Directory listings help a new site in three ways: they confirm to search engines that the business exists, they bring a few early referring domains, and they give AI assistants structured descriptions to learn from. All three come from quality, not count. Our guide to why directory listings still matter puts it plainly: 20 relevant directories outperform 100 random ones.
The cost is mostly time. About 70% of the directories that matter for B2B and SaaS are free, and a complete profile with a unique description, screenshots and categories takes 30–45 minutes. Twenty listings therefore take roughly 13 hours spread over a month. Unique copy is worth the effort: the same guide reports that listings with rewritten descriptions perform around 30% better than copy-pasted ones.
After the first 20, move effort to links that need a relationship: partner pages, guest articles and client case studies. Directories are the base layer of early SEO, but rankings for competitive terms come from content and earned links over the following months, as explained in how long SEO takes to bring B2B leads.
Choosing the 20 directories
- Indexed by GoogleA site: search should return its category pages. If it returns nothing, the listing passes nothing.
- Lists your competitorsIf similar products or agencies appear there, buyers and algorithms already treat it as a relevant place.
- Updated this yearCheck the newest listings. A directory without fresh submissions is usually abandoned.
- Matches your categorySoftware directories for SaaS, agency directories for services, plus one or two local business listings.
- Backed by a direct channelDirectory traffic starts small. While it grows, Meetcatcher can bring first conversations by suggesting companies that fit your offer and letting you invite them to a short call.
Submit 5–10 listings a week rather than all at once, keep a sheet with each URL and login, and refresh the descriptions when your positioning changes. Paying for a featured spot is a separate decision, covered in whether paid directory listings are worth it.
